2010 Sunday Friendly XI Captain's Report

by David Scorer

This season has again been another successful one with club using the Sunday side to give those most keen the opportunity to play afternoon cricket.

Over 45 different players have been involved with the onus being on everybody getting a game and contributing to the match, and the inclusion of colts has given many their first taste of adult cricket which should put the club in a good position for the future.

A big thank you must go to a number of players who have been skippering and helping out in my absence, Karl Graham, Rob Drinkwater, Sunil Bajaria, Steve and Henry Smith, Luke Loveridge, Matt Betts, etc, to name but a few.

There have been many regular players that have also been a great help including Sam Slattery, Lee Reynolds, Graham Harrington, Dan Levey, Mike Slamon, Raul Bajaria, John Botten, Martin O’Shea, Olly Woosnam, Keith Riches, Mike Oprych, Chris Hamer, amongst others (sorry if I’ve missed you out).

Again a special mention must go to Sue Slattery who is always on hand to offer help and sets the highest of standards with her teas.

The first come first serve team selection technique has worked superbly with the team being arranged in a matter of hours rather than days. It has however raised concerns over the strength of our team and may need to be altered in the future.

On average each week, we have had 15 players who are asking for a place, which is excellent and the target must continue to field two teams on a Sunday, which is certainly achievable.

Once again, many thanks must go to the committee for all the support and hard work, that keeps this club running and especially to the individuals who do well and above more than their own fair share.

To support the club I feel that clear ground rules need to be established with regards to paying subs and match fees and a no pay - no play policy would ensure those who are organised and helpful to the financial running and supporting of the club, should be rewarded.

I will be unable to skipper the Sunday side this year but I know that Karl (and/or who ever will be supporting him) will be excellent in the role this season. I will always be available to help out and play whenever I can, and I would urge everyone to fully support our clubs skippers to make their roles as rewarding as possible.
